I just returned from the annual fall rug market in New York.

The market exists to provide an opportunity for dealers to purchase rugs from the entire weaving world.

Whether I’m searching for Persian rugs or hand-knotted rugs from Turkey, Armenia, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Nepal, India, China, Egypt, or a hand-full of other countries I can find them there.

Why don’t I solely travel overseas to purchase rugs?

For one, I’d never see my family. For another, I can often find much more beautiful rugs by purchasing from importers. Let’s face it, someone who has full time employees traveling through the mountains of Afghanistan to cherry pick the best tribal rugs is going to have a selection far superior to what I could hope to find. Moreover, the concept of traveling in the “wild west” of Afghanistan isn’t something I have the courage to do!

So, what did I purchase? TOO MUCH. My accountant is going to kill me, lol.

I found some beautiful Persian tribal gabbehs made with fine hand-spun wool from the zagros mountains and dyed with natural dyestuffs.

The colors absolutely glow. From India I selected some gorgeous pieces combining wool with silk motifs. While detailed the colors are quite tonal so they don’t feel in the slightest bit busy. In fact, at first glance one might not even notice that the designs are traditional. They are unique and I haven’t seen anything similar before. I also found some new Tibetan rugs in a new, highly textured weave. It seems that everyone is really looking to decorate with rugs that are not formal. So, I sought out more transitional designs. And, I looked for rugs in today’s “hot” colors. Greys in particular are becoming important so I found this palette.
