Using a Rug Pad
An Oriental rug is like a work of art – and thus, like a fine painting or sculpture, you need to invest in caring for and preserving it.
By laying a rug pad under your Oriental rug, you’ll help preserve its quality and improve its presentation.
A rug pad serves three main purposes: It prevents your rug from slipping, sliding, and creasing; it reduces the amount of pressure placed on the rug; and it improves the soft, plush feel you feel when you step on your rug.
Depending on the age, quality, and type of Oriental rug you have, a rug pad may or may not be absolutely necessary. Though rug pads are always encouraged for any type of Oriental rug, new and thick Oriental rugs may not absolutely “need” pads. Heavy rugs with little wear can usually hold their shape easily on the floor, not creasing or slipping under foot traffic.
Be sure to choose a high-quality rug pad that won’t break or deteriorate over time.
Most rug pads are made from synthetic materials like rubber, polyurethane foam, or look similar to felt. That being said, many hardwood floor owners prefer felt-like pads, which are lower-risk when it comes to damaging your floors.
Depending on the type of hardwood floors you have, and the sealants used to preserve your floors, polyurethane or rubber could damage them over the long term. If you have pets or small children, consider investing in a liquid-resistant rug pad. Cut your rug pad about 1 inch smaller than your rug to prevent it from showing.
Remember to vacuum your rug regularly and rotate it at least once a year to help preserve its quality and appearance.
