Glossary of Rug Terms #10
Every month or so, we will post a few interesting rug-related terms and their definitions in this glossary for your knowledge and enjoyment.

This month we will be focusing on rug terms starting with the letter ‘Y’.
Yaglik- Napkin. Some of these have been elaborately embroidered.
Yarn- A single or multiple ply of combed or carded filaments that have been spun or twisted to form a continuous strand. Yarns of different types are used in the warp, weft and pile of oriental rugs.
Yarn Size- Yarn size is the equivalent of yarn count, yarn fineness, or yarn density. It is a number that is a multiple of a standard length in one pound of yarn. The standard length depends on the type of fiber. In all cases, the larger the size number, the smaller the yarn size. A size 2 yarn contains twice the standard length in one pound of yarn, a size 3 yarn contains three times the standard lnegth in one pound of yarn, and so on.
Yatak- Anatolion shaggy-pile rug made as a sleeping mat.
Yazma- Hand printed or hand-painted cloth; bed cover.
Yei Rugs- Navajo rugs portraying the spirit intermediaries between god and man that are shown in the Navajo sand painting. In some rugs, three sides of the field are outlined by the elongated body of the “rainbow goddess”
Yellow- A color of the visual spectrum. A wide variety of plant sources for natural yellow dyes in oriental rugs. Generally, yellow vegetable dyes have greater susceptibility to fading than other colors.
Yuncu- A nomadic tribe of northwest Anatolia near Balikesir; the source of kilims of simple, bold, and archaic designs.
